Position Information

Job Description

The Hampton Roads District is seeking a person for the position of Electronic Technician Supervisor ITS. This person will ensure effective and efficient operation and maintenance of regional interstate electrical systems including repair of freeway roadway lighting assets, control devices, load centers, wiring and fixtures. Oversee maintenance and repair of freeway electrical assets. Provide technical assistance and guidance in evaluating and resolving interstate roadway lighting problems. Collaborate with technical and engineering staff to facilitate operation and maintenance of the regional transportation network. Oversee consultants and contractors providing electrical systems support and services. Maintain and operate region wide interstate roadway lighting network. Ensure team members are trained and proficient in new interstate lighting technologies and equipment in traffic management systems. Provide input on transportation management and LED technologies for integration into the regional system. Manage and direct maintenance and repair of freeway devices, including cameras, gates, and control devices. Ensure compliance with established safety standards, VDOT policies and procedures, and electrical equipment operational standards.

  • Oversight – Coordinate with and support field technicians and contractors to implement work plans. Lead field staff and monitor contractors performing maintenance and repair of freeway traffic management equipment and roadway lighting networks. Maintain records and prepare reports. Oversee and verify consultant work performing operations and maintenance support. Coordinate the installation and repair of new and relocated roadway lighting assets. Oversee implementation of preventive maintenance program for regional interstate lighting system components and freeway electrical assets.

  • Budgets and Operational Plans – Assist with development of operational plans, budgets and expenditure documentation for regional transportation management systems to include Interstate Roadway Lighting. Assist in development of disaster recovery plans. Implement and maintain emergency response plan.

  • Communication- Communicate effectively with management concerning operations and problems with interstate lighting.

  • Other Specific Responsibilities – Manages roadway lighting stock location at Frederick Area Headquarters. Manages the purchase of roadway lighting supplies for all lighting repair activities. Placed in rotation for the Roadway Lighting after Hours on Call Schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in the maintenance and repair of lighting systems to include a variety of electrical devices. Ability to supervise staff and plan, coordinate and prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities. Thorough understanding of roadway lighting equipment and operations. Ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records. Experience applying federal and state regulations and standards related to electrical devices, lighting maintenance and operations. Thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards related to LED lighting technology. Demonstrated ability in the areas of critical thinking, problem solving and effective decision making. A valid (DPOR) Journeyman Electrician License is required. Position requires a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 6 months. VDOT requires successful candidate to pass a pre-employment physical, a drug test and obtain a valid DOT medical card within 6 months of hire.

  • Experience: Substantial experience with electrical lighting systems. Experience in the electronic field to include Roadway lighting systems maintenance and repairs.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in VDOT standards and specifications related to interstate roadway lighting construction and inspection. Knowledge of VDOT allowable lane closure limitations, LCAMS and VA traffic requirements. Knowledge of VDOT procurement and inventory management guidelines.

  • Education: College degree in electronics technology preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree.
Special Requirements

Fingerprint background check, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Valid (DPOR) Journeyman Electrician License. Valid CDL license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
